Ideal for any season, BaseLayers have been designed to regulate body temperature whatever the conditions. The key to cold weather dressing is layering. Multiple layers provide better protection against the cold than one thick garment. The air between the layers of clothing provide improved insulation than clothing itself. Experts break layering into three sections: 1) BaseLayer 2) Insulating layer 3) Outer protection layer 1. BaseLayer A BaseLayer, also known as a ‘foundation layer’ lies against your skin. Its primary function is to regulate your body temperature. In cold conditions a BaseLayer will keep you both warm and dry, by providing insulation and most importantly by dealing with moisture removal. In warm weather the wicking process will move moisture to the surface of the BaseLayer where it will be able to evaporate more quickly, leaving you dry and comfortable. Your BaseLayer should always be as closely fitted as possible; it needsto be touching your skin in order to absorb the moisture produced by it. Good quality BaseLayers are made to stretch with the wearer to providea skin tight fit. 2. Insulating layer The purpose of your main insulating layer is to trap in heat. They provide a lot of heat for relatively light weight. A good example of an insulating layer would be a fleece. 3. Protective layer The most important consideration for your protective layer is that it traps air inside and is wind and water resistant
