Our Timeline

Where it all began... 1983

18-year-old, Stewart Graham founded ‘Island Fabrications’ and set up as a one-man creel manufacturing and steel fabrication business based in 500 square foot unit in Stornoway in the Hebrides in Scotland.

Only a handful of months after starting up the business, Stewart Graham won the Shell Livewire Award! From more than 300 original entries, the judges selected his creel business as the most promising young business enterprise.

Creel manufacturing factory established... 1987

“I want to go ahead, expand and create more employment on the islands.”

Only four years after the business started, our factory in Stornoway opened its doors becoming one of the major employers on the Isle of Lewis with 30 employees. A new 6,500 sq ft. factory was established with a sole focus solely on the production of creels for the UK and export markets.

Company rebrands to Gael Force and relocates to Inverness...1990

In late 1990, following the company's first acquisition, Island Fabrications rebranded to Gael Force Marine Equipment.

The re-brand tied in with the decision to expand distribution, warehousing, and sales to the Longman Industrial Estate in Inverness, while Stornoway's capacity for creel production increased to almost 2,000 creels per month.

It also allowed us to set up our 'mobile shop', driving marine equipment around Scotland's harbours by van, directly to our customers.

Flagship Marine Equipment Megastore and Head Office opened in Inverness... 2001

With the company growing at pace, we were ready to expand even further with the creation of a new marine equipment/chandlery ‘one-stop-shop’. At the six-acre site in Inverness’ Anderson Street, our Marine Megastore opened in August 2001.  7,500 sqft of shop space dedicated to leisure boating, commercial fishing, aquaculture, and commercial marine equipment.

Celebrated sailor Dame Ellen MacArthur joined Stewart and employees to officially open the Megastore.  At the time, Ellen said: “ As a company which has followed a vision and succeeded by taking on ever greater challenges, I feel an affinity with Gael Force and am proud to be associated with them”.

Marine Equipment division opens up in Plymouth... 2011

Thanks to a buoyant commercial fishing market and strong customer base on the South West coast, our Marine Equipment division opened up new premises close to the heart of the action in Plymouth.

Headed up by Stuart Cameron, the small commercial unit has been a mainstay of the Fish Quay at Sutton Harbour for 13 years now.

Gael Force Turns 40!... 2023
